Gracie BULLYPROOF - The Golden Rule

On disc one of the 10-disc
instructional DVD series, Ryron and Rener share the unique strategies
their father used to introduce them to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and engage them
in the learning process at such a young age. �Of all the things
discussed in the Parent Preparation Course, one of the most important
is the Golden Rule - when teaching children, expect nothing and praise
everything. Simply put, the number one mistake made by all parents is
that they expect more than the child can give. The reason for the
parents' high expectations is because they see the big picture - they
want the child to perfect the techniques as fast as possible so they
will be ready to defend against bullies if they are attacked. The
problem lies in the fact that the child does not see the big picture,
and all they really want is to play with mommy or daddy on the living
room and to be recognized for being good at something. When the
parents' expectations are too high, they are constantly correcting the
child, and this causes the child to associate the practice of Gracie
Jiu-Jitsu with their own incompetency. After so many lessons of them
not being "good enough," the child will quit because they do not want
to continue to disappoint their parents. So, ultimately, it is the
parents' amplified desire to help the child that causes the child to
quit.
